College English Test (CET)

What is this? In China, English is a second language,

and most college students need to take this CET exam in order to graduate.

It covers very basic vocabularies and is meant for non-English major students.

A perfect score is 710, officially there is no Pass/Fail but in practice 425 in Band 4 is a prerequisite to take the Band 6 exam.

CET Band 4

- Easier vocabularies, no speaking. Suitable for Beginners to get started

- Passing it has no benefits; but flunk it and you might not graduate.

CET Band 6

- Slightly more difficult vocabularies, includes a speaking test. Suitable for students somewhat comfortable with English.

- Scoring above 500 can be a plus for civil service posts.

TEM Band 4

- Test for English Major. A common exam for college students who major in related undergraduate degrees. Perfect score is 100 and a student needs 60 to Pass.

- Typically administered to sophomore students.

TEM Grade 8 (Test for English Major)

-This is the more difficult exam for English related Majors in China’s undergraduate system. Passing this is a more challenging task, and typically garners respect when applying for jobs.

- Suitable syllabus for students trying to excel.
